Preparing for a Painting Estimate

So you’ve decided it’s time to check painting off the to-do list and get some estimates on cost. Here are a couple of tips on how to prepare for your painting estimate!

  • Inspect the area/s that you want to be painted and note what you want to be included in the scope of work. If you were just planning on just your kitchen walls but you are planning on changing out the lighting, you will want to include the ceilings as well. Also, think about whether you want the trim, doors, windows, and insides of closets/pantries done as well. For exteriors take a look at the siding, trim, windows, and doors. Don’t forget about the shutters, sheds, and decks. If you are not sure if something needs to be done let your estimator know and they can guide you.

  • Make sure areas are accessible so they can be inspected for any damage or repairs.

  • Think about how many colors you are planning on using. The exact color choice isn’t needed for the estimating process but an idea of the number of colors and if there are going to be any accent walls will be helpful for an accurate estimate of the paint needed.

  • Ask for an estimate on areas you are considering but may not be ready for. This way you can add it on if you change your mind or you will have an estimate to plan for budgeting the next project.

  • Write down any questions you have for the company so you don’t forget to ask during your estimate! Here are some questions that will help you while comparing quotes:

How many coats of paint are being applied?

    What prep work is included?

What brand and quality of paint do you use?

    Is your company insured?

How many years have you been in business?

Do you warranty or guarantee your work?

Do you provide all materials needed for the job?

    Do you provide color consultations?
